Hope Window Tax - 1815

`The year is 1815, the 24th of May, and N WOODROOFE along with Jno MIDDLETON as assessors and Robert MIDDLETON as collector put their names to a now fading document, written in small letters, that lists the number of windows in individual houses in Hope.  Some 95 separate entries are made. Again not much to be gained, but you should recognise the names and you now know how many windows they had in their house. This no doubt was part of the Window Tax, by 1825 the list would have diminished as those homes with fewer than eight windows were exempt.  It was abolished in 1851.`
