Monumental Inscription

Mellor Methodist chapel

The chapel is now redundant and has been converted to a private residence.  There was just one grave with an inscription.

Sacred to the memory of Thomas Knowles WALLER born at Eccleshall Staffordshire 1780 died at Mellor 1864.  In early life he went to London where he obtained a knowledge of salvation through faith in Christ, and joined the Wesleyan Society.  He afterwards removed to Manchester where he laboured as a local preacher and class leader with great earnestness & success.  In 1817 he settled at Mellor where he established the first Sunday School and Methodist services.  After a long and useful life he died a peaceful and happy death.
